Why a roller mill, and not another hammer mill
Many posho mills in Kenya are hammer mills. They grind the whole kernel, bran and germ together, into one bag. The Roff Posho is a roller mill: it breaks the kernel open and a screen separates most of the bran and some of the germ.
| Posho Hammer mill | Roff Posho Roller Mill | |
|---|---|---|
| The meal | Everything milled together | Whiter, higher quality sifted meal, with most of the bran and some of the germ removed |
| The bran | Stays in the meal | Comes out of its own bag outlet, about 15 to 18% of the maize, for animal feed |
| Shelf life | Spoils sooner, because the germ is milled in | Keeps better, with less germ in the meal |
| Power | More power for the same bag of maize | Less power: two 5.5 kW motors |
| Noise and dust | High noise and dust levels | Much less noise and dust |
| Space | Small | Same footprint: 3 m by 2 m, fits in a single garage |
| Fineness | Finer, if your customers want very fine meal | Standard sifted meal. |

Bottom line: a hammer mill grinds everything together. The Roff Posho separates the bran, so you bag whiter meal for your customers and bran for the feed market, in the same space and on less power.
Community milling
What the Roff Posho is, and what it is not

What the Posho is
A community mill. Customers bring their maize, you mill it for a fee, and they leave with whiter meal and a bag of bran. It mills and separates with screens.

What it is not
It does not make Grade 1 Sifted or packaged maize meal under your own brand. That is a commercial plant with extra steps, such as the Roff SP-1, and a different business.

Whiter still
Condition the maize first
Add a little water, let the maize rest, then mill. The bran comes off in flakes instead of shattering into the meal, and the meal is whiter again. The 70-litre horizontal batch mixer does this for a community mill. Ask about it when you enquire.
