Senwes Grainlink is an established and trusted agricultural company that specialises in the handling and storage of grain between the producers and buyers. Their silo infrastructure is strategically placed in all the major grain cultivation areas in South Africa. With a capacity of no less than 4,6 million tonnes the infrastructure constitutes more than 25% of the total South African commercial storage capacity. Grainlink has 65 silo sites in the North West and Free State province alone, making them one of the biggest suppliers in the industry.
Directly after the grain is received from the surrounding farms and sea ports, it is distributed by means of road-freight to millers, feed producers and other sectors throughout South Africa. The Grainlink network plays a vital role in ensuring food security in South Africa.
High volumes of grain are transported to and from the Grainlink silo sites everyday which, as expected, causes high concentrations of dust in the grain handling environment. As detailed in previous articles, high concentrations of dust pose both serious health and safety risks to employees. Prolonged exposure to dust can cause allergic reactions and asthma in the short term, while high concentrations of dust can create dust clouds that in turn can cause explosions. Senwes’ goal was to reduce these risks by installing an efficient and cost-effective dust extraction system where the liability was tested to be the highest. ROFF Industries was appointed to design, supply and install the system making use of the Jacob Pipework System.
The Jacob modular pipework system is between 100 and 200 diameters and was selected along with the Quick Connect clamps and U-Shaped seals. As a result of the quick installation utilising the Jacob system, downtime was significantly minimised. The seals drastically reduced leakages and made the system more power efficient by reducing the motor size on the fan. ROFF produced the custom built high efficiency cyclone and frame, as well as supporting brackets.
After completion, the dust in the environment was reduced to safe working levels and employees no longer needed the use of dust masks. The risk of explosions was also drastically reduced through the lower concentrations of dust in the environment. An added safety measure is provided as all the parts in the Jacob range are conductive without the need for further grounding.
