The dangers of dust in the workplace

Dust, as we now know, is a health concern in many workplaces such as agriculture, lumber, food processing and other high dust occurring industries. But, high concentrations of dust also pose a serious safety concern.

Dust explosions occur when enough dust accumulates in a confined space and is exposed to an ignition source in the presence of oxygen or other oxidizing gaseous mediums. Dust extraction and ventilation are among the preferred methods to prevent the accumulation of dust to such a degree that it becomes hazardous.

ROFF piping systems offers a complete and efficient solution through extraction that reduce the risk in the working environment. In the past, food processing plants and factories such as flour and maize mills have produced some of the most historic dust explosions. Though not the biggest, the first ever recorded dust explosion took place during the 18th century in Turin, Italy when a cloud of flour combusted in a bakery. Only two employees were injured during the explosion, but the account gave valuable information into the defining elements that cause dust explosions and which we now know as the explosion pentagon:

1. Dust (ignition)
2. Dispersion (a cloud)
3. Confinement
4. Oxygen
5. Ignition (a flame or spark)

According to Jan Jordaan, sales manager of ROFF piping systems that to extract a dusty environment, you need negative airflow at the critical dusty points with minimum loss of the main product in the process. “You only need to get rid of the unwanted dust."

ROFF has develop various solutions over the years that can be applied to dusty environments for dust extraction purposes.” ROFF’s resolution is to design systems that are efficient, effective and to use the correct products for the application. One of the products that are utilised is a German product supplied by Jacob Pipework System. One of Jacob’s unique products is the U-shaped seal that ensures a secure seal between pipe joints. A second is the Quick-Connect Pull Rings for easy installation and maintenance.

The Jacob system is conductive which reduces the risk of dust explosions due the static electricity buildup in the system. Every extraction application is unique and new solutions must be found for every project to ensure a successful installation.
